Implementation of the current National Strategic Plans for HIV/AIDS and STIs; and TB (2007-11) which present a consensus roadmap for South Africa towards achievement of Universal Access towards HIV and TB prevention, treatment and care and support come to an end this year, 2011. ? SANAC has initiated a process to review the current Provincial and National HIV/AIDS and STI Strategic Plans (2007-2011) and develop new integrated Provincial and National HIV/STI and TB Strategic Plans (2012-2016). The process entails distilling the wealth of global normative guidance to South African context. The proposed approach for the development of the plans is bottom-up with a focus on results. The new strategic plans will integrate TB. These changes reflect the fact that the environment for the HIV response in South Africa, just like in other countries, has evolved over the years calling for the cultivation of a common vision for the country for all actors to subscribe to. This vision requires a paradigm shift to reflect an urgent need for the dual HIV and TB response to be transformed into an investment where capacity development for implementation takes centre stage. In addition, intervention programmes will focus on achievement of meaningful impacts such as better quality of life and longer survival. To realise the common vision there is need for strategic prioritisation and focus on high impact interventions that are supported by the current wealth of epidemiological evidence. ? Against this background, the SANAC Secretariat proposed a Framework for the development of National and Provincial Strategic Plans 2012 ? 2016 which was endorsed by SANAC Plenary meeting held in Eastern Cape on 14th April 2011. The new NSP is scheduled to be launched by the Presidency on the 01st December 2011.?
