Thursday, October 9 Day 1 ??? DEPART USA ??? Today we depart Newark or JFK  to connect with our overnight flight to Rome aboard a wide-bodied jet. We enjoy in-flight movies, dinner and breakfast aloft. Friday, October 10 Day 2 - ROME/LANCIANO/ SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO  ??? This morning we arrive in Rome where we are met and board our motorcoach for our ride to San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio lived for 52 years until his death in 1968.  We have a short visit to Lanciano, the site of the oldest Eucharistic Miracle certified by the Church.  We continue to San Giovanni Rotondo where we celebrate Mass at the tomb of Saint Padre Pio. Afterward, we visit his, cell, confessional, crucifix from which he received the stigmata, and nearly everything he owned and touched.  We transfer to our hotel for dinner and overnight. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.   Note : Early arrival in Rome Saturday, October 11 DAY 3 ??? SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO/LORETO/ASSISI - This morning, we return to the Padre Pio sanctuary for a short time of prayer.   We drive north towards Ancona and visit and celebrate Mass at Loreto, the site of the Santa Casa or Holy House.  Ancient tradition tells us angels carried the house of the Holy Family from Nazareth to Loreto as it was about to be destroyed by Holy Land invaders. We proceed to the hilltop village of Assisi, the home of Saint Francis.   Dinner and overnight at our hotel. Question:  Sunday, October 12 DAY 4 ??? ASSISI/ MONTECATINI TERME- This morning we make the short walk to the Basilica of St. Francesco to celebrate Mass (preferably at the tomb).   After our visit of the Basilica, we begin our walking tour of the village. Included, is the Church of St. Clare, ???the little plant of Blessed Francis??? as she loved to call herself, where we view the San Damiano crucifix that spoke to St. Francis.   Kneeling before it, Francis composed the following prayer, which is considered to be among the oldest of his writings:  ???All Highest, Glorious God, cast your light into the darkness of my heart.  Give me right faith, firm hope, perfect charity, and profound humility, with wisdom and perception, O Lord, so that I may do what is truly your most holy will.  Amen.???  Later, on, our taxis take us to the Church of  San Damiano.  We proceed to the lower town for a visit to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, and the Portiuncula, Francis' Church of the Little Portion.  We continue to Tuscany, to the delightful spa town of Montecatini Terme.  Dinner and overnight at our hotel. Monday, October 13 Day 4 - MONTECATINI TERME/ FLORENCE/ROME -  Today, we see the highlights of Florence, the jewel of the Renaissance. We start with Mass at a local parish church.  We drive to Florence and stop at the Piazzale Michelangelo for a panoramic view of the city.  We visit the Duomo, the heart of the city with its cupola by Brunelleschi, completed in 1240, its campanile by Giotto and Baptistry with incomparable bronze doors by Ghiberti.  Next we visit the Galleria dell???Accademia to see the world famous David and other magnificent giant marble sculptures created by Michelangelo.  Afterward, we visit the Basilica of Santa Croce. Among the most famous who lie here are Galileo, Rossini, Michelangelo and Macchiaveli.  We will have a brief time for shopping or personal adventure.  We continue to Rome, the Eternal City.  We drive on  the ancient heart of Rome for a panoramic view of Colosseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus passing by the Capitoline Hill before we transfer to our hotel for dinner and overnight. Tuesday, October 14 Day 6 - VATICAN CITY/ROME - This morning, we go to the Vatican, where we celebrate Mass below St. Peters. Afterward, we tour the Basilica, then see the treasures of the Vatican Museum.  We marvel at Michelangelo???s restored frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and the wonders of St. Peter???s.  This afternoon, we start with the Basilica of St. Mary Major, then to the Church of St Alphonsus Liguori, the Shrine of Mother of Perpetual Help in Rome.  We proceed to St John Lateran and the Holy Stairs.  Time permitting; we will visit the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, built around the room of St. Helena???s imperial palace.  The relics from the Holy Land enshrined in the Chapel of the Holy Relics include one nail use in the Crucifixion and fragment of the Title of the Cross which shows the word ???Nazarene??? written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.   The rest of the afternoon is free for shopping and exploration or  join the optional walking tour to Trevi Fountain,  Piazza Navona, Pantheon & Spanish Steps.  Dinner is on our own. Wednesday, October 15 Teresa of Avila Day 7 - VATICAN CITY/ROME - This morning, we make our way to St. Peter's for an audience with Pope Benedict XVI  if he is in residence.  After lunch on our own, we visit the Basilica of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli where a fresco of the Blessed Virgin, tradition tells us, was painted by St. Luke, the Madonna di Ara Coeli. This Basilica is also famous for the miraculous Infant Jesus (Gesu Bambino)  carved from olive-wood from the Garden of Gethsemane by a Franciscan friar in Jerusalem in 1400. According to tradition, its coloring which glows with a translucence that is beyond human skill was completed by an angel.  We proceed to St. Paul???s Beyond the Walls where we celebrate Mass. The huge, imposing Basilica, second only to St. Peter???s and one of the largest churches in the Christian world, contains an unusual gallery of papal portraits: 265 tablets portraying the popes of the past. We enjoy a farewell dinner with entertainment at a local Roman restaurant tonight before we return to our hotel for overnight Thursday, October 16 Day 8 - USA ??? Today we make our way home with memories of a lifetime.
