It reached its climax of its power after defeating their rival city Athens in the Peloponnesian war in 431-404 BC. Sparta's culture was based on loyalty to their military. For example, boys at age 7 enter a brutal state-sponsored, military training, education and socialization program. This system was called Agoge, this system emphasized discipline, duty and endurance. While a males life may be difficult a women's was i guess you could say easier, they weren't active in war and they had were educated and enjoyed more status and freedom than other Greek women. Because men were professional soldiers, all manual labor was done by slaves. Which were the Helots. Even though Sparta's military was strong they soon were defeated by Thebes at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. So, their empire went into a long period of decline.Map Key
