This map details the escape route followed by the stranded party of 29 Australian airmen. Following the invasion of Timor in February 1942, this group was forced into the Timor jungle. They headed northwest, and were led to the village of Kapsali where, it was hoped, they would be picked up by flying boat. Unbeknownst to the stranded men, they were taken into a secret lair of the ancient Sonba'i people. For centuries, this safe haven had been used to protect the rulers of this land during times of war with the colonial authorities.
