Anderson's History Class

AthensAthens is the capital Greece and was originally founded in 3000 BC. Athens area is 15.04 mi. and has a population of 3,153,000. Athens has been established for 5000 years and their first ruler was Cecrops. But with time Athens then resorted into being a democracy. The Peloponnesian War was a war fought in ancient Greece for power between Athens and Sparta. These cities were the two most powerful cities in Ancient Greece at that time. But the conflicts between them started because of Sparta being ruled by two kings. They both ruled until they died or were forced out of office. On the other hand, Athens was ruled by archons, who were elected annually and voted on by the people. Athens called to this day the birthplace of democracy. Sadly “Athens was forced to surrender, and Sparta won the Peloponnesian War in 404 BC.” As a result of the war, Sparta gained all power. So, both cities fought to be able to rule and that their form of government is what they wanted. After the war Sparta and their oligarchy got power but it was short-lived when they got defeated. Athens got hit with a plague which was a major setback but, in the end, Greece returned to a democracy. Athens received the power of the spartan empire, which made Athens one of the strongest cities. But today Greece overcame all that hatred and united as a whole country! The Athens then were able to enjoy a good live getting married and having kids. Their jobs consisted of farmer, fisherman, soldier, teacher, government worker, and craftsman. This is a smart but important part of the history of Athens!
