After having their homes burned by fires and shook by earthquakes teenagers Jolie Logan and Kate Keely are two of many victims. Kate Keely, a strong-minded, independent orphan quits high school to go to work to support herself and her elderly aunt. Jolie Logan, rich, recovering from an almost fatal case of scarlet fever, is very devastated by the accidental death of her mother.
