Map Madagascar - Country Information

Map of Madagascar - The Republic of Madagascar is an island nation in the Indian Ocean of the southeastern coast of Africa. The map of Madagascar comprises the island of Madagascar, which is the fourth largest island in the world, as well as numerous peripheral islands. The island of Madagascar broke off the Indian subcontinent around 88 million years ago following the breakup of the supercontinent of Gondwana, and, because of this, the species which evolved on Madagascar did so in relative isolation, creating a number of unique species, and rich biodiversity. Along the eastern coast of the map of Madagascar runs a narrow, steep escarpment, which contains much of the nation's remaining tropical rainforest. To the west of this ridge, the map of central Madagascar is dominated by a plateau which averages 750 to 1500 metres above sea level. This plateau region is the mostly densely populated, and comprises many terraced, rice-growing valleys between grassy, deforested hills. To the west of the plateau, the map of Madagascar becomes increasingly arid, and slopes down gradually towards the Mozambique Channel.
