Map of Haiti - The Republic of Haiti occupies the smaller western portion of the island of Hispaniola, which is located in the Caribbean Sea, and which is part of the Greater Antillean archipelago, and which Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic. The island has had a history of powerful and destructive earthquakes, with the most recent major quake occurring on January 12, 2010, with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale. Geographically, the map of Haiti is dominated by rugged mountains, with the highest point being Pic la Selle, at 2680 metres. These rugged mountains are interspersed here and there with small coastal plains and river valleys. Also part of the map of Haiti are numerous smaller islands, including the island of Tortuga, which was historically famous from during the time of the Caribbean pirate and privateering period. Haiti's residents have cut down an estimated 98% of the island's once lush forest in order to fire their cookstoves and provide heating fuel, leading to increased desertificat.
