Maps of the continent South AmericaSouth America is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean while North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. Brazil is South America's biggest country both in terms of size and population. South American's total population is close to 400 million (again a relatively small figure compared to a country like India or China). The main languages are Portuguese and Spanish which is based on the fact that the two former colonial super powers Spain and Portugal more or less divided South America among themselves. In the recent past South American governments have drifted to the political left, with socialist leaders being elected in Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela. Leading economies are Brazil and Argentina. South America is also home to the Rainforest which has been cut down at an alarming rate over the past decades. Amazingly in this modern day and age there are still some uncontacted tribes residing in the Amazon Rainforest.
