Map Netherlands - Country Information
Map of Netherlands - The map of the Netherlands, sometimes known as Holland, depicts a low-lying country in northwest Europe, which is bordered by the North Sea to the north and west, by Germany to the east, and by Belgium to the south. The map of Netherlands is divided politically into twelve provinces, with some offshore territory on islands in the Caribbean. Twenty percent of the land area of the map of the Netherlands is below sea level, while 50 percent of the land area is less than one metre above sea level. Most of the areas located below sea level are man made, due to centuries of poorly controlled, extensive peat extraction. The map of the Netherlands can be divided into two main areas by three large rivers; the Rhine, and its two main distributaries, the Waal and the Meuse. These rivers functioned as a natural barrier between early fiefdoms, which also resulted in a cultural divide that is evident in phonetic traits which differ from north to south. Because of the low-lying nature of the map of Netherlands, the terrain is extensively shaped by humans in an effort to control flooding. Extensive dikes, drained lakes called polders, and other structures have been created in an effort to control water levels to prevent flooding of inhabited areas.
