Map Italy - Country Information
Map of Italy - The map of the Italian Republic comprises the entire Italian Peninsula, as well as the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, which are the two largest islands in the Mediterranean. The Italian Peninsula is located in South-Central Europe, and is bordered in the north by France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia along the Alps mountain range. The capital city of Italy is Rome, and it has long been an important centre of religion and politics for western civilization. The map of Italy is often described as being "boot-shaped." Running down the spine of the map of the Italian Peninsula are the Apennine Mountains, and, because of its location at the meeting point of two major tectonic plates, Italy has the potential for major seismic and volcanic activity. Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano in Europe, and is famous for its destruction and unique preservation of the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
