Maps of the continent Asia
Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent, located primarily in the eastern and northern hemispheres. With roughly 4.3 billion people, it hosts 60% of the world's current human population. Leading the population count are China (1 billion) and India (800 million). In comparison: Europe as a whole has roughly 700 million people. During the 20th century Asia's population nearly quadrupled as a result of industrialization and better medical care systems. Asia's strongest economy today is China. This change has come over the past few decades and China's growth is expected to continue while other formerly leading nations begin to struggle (e.g. Japan). Asia holds a wide range of ethnic and religious groups which often lead to long lasting conflicts (e.g. Nepal/China, Pakistan/India) and civil war (Burma). Asia has also seen the decline and breakup of the former Soviet Union. The Russian Federation then saw sates like the Baltic states or Kazakhstan battle for autonomy (and succeed). The Middle East has been a hot spot in terms of religious wars as well and is one of the world's most volatile regions as of today.
